Young Mothers, Inc. was formed in 2011 as the brainchild of a young mother who struggled to find resources and support while trying to navigate motherhood and the associated responsibilities. With little family support, our founder, Kamille Bundy, fought through being a victim of domestic violence to create a safe and secure environment for herself and young child. Having been raised by a young mother, Kamille was no stranger to the realities of that path.
However, she was overwhelmed by the isolation, uncertainty, and lack of resources she experienced what that became her own story. It was through that emotional turmoil, hurt, and financial hardship that Kamille was able to connect with other mothers experiencing the same challenges. In addition to deficiencies in the financial resources, educational services, and wellness programs available to young mothers, Kamille observed that there was one common theme – feeling loved and valued on the journey of being better women, mothers, and members of their communities.
In 2014, YMI hosted its first specialized wellness event called “I Love You Makeover”, partnering with organizations across the DC metro (DMV) area including Covenant House DC, My Sister’s Place, and Sasha Bruce. This event facilitated the development of relationships with likeminded organizations that focused on women and encouraging young mothers to feel beautiful inside and out no matter their circumstances. Since then, YMI has created volunteer opportunities for over 2,000 professionals and students as well as supported the lives of over 1,000 women in need of love, guidance, and support.
